Detailed Instructions for Applying

You can apply on-line for admission to the M.S. or Ph.D. graduate programs in Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences. Here are instructions for doing so.

    • Checklist of required materials
      These items must be submitted to apply for graduate admission

      The following items must be received before your application can be reviewed. Once all of these are received, your application will be circulated among the graduate faculty, and a decision will be reached regarding admission within approximately six weeks. (Directions for obtaining and submitting the necessary forms are provided below.)

    • Items sent directly to the Michigan Tech Graduate School.
      • 1. Application form (may be completed as part of an on-line application, or you may print a copy and mail it to the Graduate School).
      • 2. Statement of purpose (may be completed as part of an on-line application; if you submit your application by mail, you include a one-to-two-page statement of purpose along with your application).
      • 3. Application fee.
      • 4. Transcripts of each college or university attended. Official transcripts should be sent directly to the Graduate School by the registrar of the college or university.
      • 5. Official GRE scores, sent directly from ETS to the Graduate School.
      • 6. For applicants who are not U.S. citizens, official TOEFL scores, sent directly from ETS to the Graduate School (a minimum TOEFL score of 600 is required).
    • Item sent directly to the Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences
      Three reference forms, sent directly from your referees to the Department. You can print copies of these forms using one of the links below, fill out the top portion, give them to your referees, and ask them to send them directly to the address listed on the forms.
    • Instructions for Applying On-line
        • 1. Print out 3 copies of the required reference form (see the links above), and have three referees send them directly to the Department at the address included on the form.
        • 2. Have ETS send your official GRE scores (and, if you are not a U.S. citizen, your official TOEFL scores) directly to the Graduate School, Michigan Technological University, 1400 Townsend Drive, Houghton, Michigan 49931-1295.
        • 3. Fill out and submit your on-line application to the Graduate School at Michigan Tech, using the on-line application web site. Be sure to fill in the statement of purpose when you apply on-line.
          Note: should the MTU on-line application site be down, do not request written materials -- instead, follow the instructions for obtaining the required forms that are listed in the next section below.
        • 4. Mail your application fee directly to the Graduate School, Michigan Technological University, 1400 Townsend Drive, Houghton, Michigan 49931-1295.


      • Instructions for Obtaining the forms required to submit your application by mail
        • 1. Print out 3 copies of the required reference form (see the links above), and have three referees send them directly to the Department at the address included on the form.
        • 2. Have ETS send your official GRE scores (and, if you are not a U.S. citizen, your official TOEFL scores) directly to the Research and Graduate School, Michigan Technological University, 1400 Townsend Drive, Houghton, Michigan 49931-1295.
        • 3. Print out a copy of the Application for Graduate Admission, available at this web site
        • 4. Write a 1- to 2-page statement of purpose describing why you wish to study in the Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences graduate program at Michigan Tech.
        • 5. Send your application, your statement of purpose, and your application fee to the Graduate School, Michigan Technological University, 1400 Townsend Drive, Houghton, Michigan 49931-1295
