I’m from Puerto Rico and am pursuing my M.Sc. degree in volcanology in Michigan Tech University. I obtained my undergraduate degree in Geology from the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez Campus in 2009.  While completing my undergraduate studies, I became interested in geologic hazards because it involves sociocultural aspects – specifically where mitigation problems exist in countries where volcanoes have not been well studied or communitie lack information.
As an undergraduate I worked with several research projects including Geologic Mapping of northern Culebra, Puerto Rico; (petrographic and geochemical analyses) and stratrigraphic analysis of the Lares Limestone Carbonate sequence, also in Puerto Rico. These projects, though unrelated to each other, helped me to discover the wonderful things that are happening on the Earth.  Several other field trips to the Dominican Republic and Soufriere Hills in Martinique have exposed me to different branches of geology and helped me better understand our living planet.

As a geoscientist my goals for my master’s degree focus on social impact of active volcanoes in Central America. I hope to gain more experience in the field and working with different people and build mitigation strategies for communities who have a potentially dangerous mountain in their backyard. I’ll be focusing my studies in gas emission and/or lava flows and developing models for determining volcanic behavior and lava characterization. New techniques of exploration are expected to become useful during my PCMI assignment.

After finishing my degree, I will consider continuing on to a PhD in geosciences or finding a job in which I can apply learned techniques and methods for volcanic mitigation.
